Standing Amongst the Rubble

A few years ago I stood amidst the rubble of a business smashed by a Google update, with COVID hot on its heels.

In just three months, our thriving business went from nearly a million page views a month to under 200,000. Travel stopped completely, wiping out 85% of our income.

Options dried up. Panic set in. All I had left were my own two hands and one simple truth:

That wasn’t the first time I’d faced disaster. A decade earlier, during the GFC, bad investments nearly bankrupted us. Back then, I learned the essential blueprint I’ve followed ever since:

Stuff is going to happen that you can’t control. It’s what YOU do with it that counts.

When realized that if I was powerful enough to create something destructive, I was just as powerful to create something better—everything changed.

That moment of near-collapse led to the birth of our travel blog. And when COVID hit, it taught me to pivot again—this time to a more sustainable, local business that relied less on algorithms and more on our story, brand, and unique skills.

What’s the formula?

Here’s the thing: People often ask me for the "secret" to success:

  • How do I pitch more effectively?

  • How many posts should I write each week?

  • How can I hack the algorithm and viral my way into millions of followers?

These are valid questions, but the truth is, they don’t define success. My success—and I’m not just talking about money or accolades—comes from expanding and harnessing my inner strengths, using them to navigate more aligned paths and take action fueled by clarity and intuition.

Our travel life and business life (well, just life) is in a constant state of flux - there is no 3, 5, or 10 step plan that can guide you through that?

How can there be? The old rules are replaced by the unknown. The only chance for surviving and thriving is how you adapt, innovate, persevere, and trust in yourself.

Here’s a recent example. I decided to double the price on a pitch. Three months ago, imposter syndrome and self-doubt would’ve kept me from even considering it. But thanks to the confidence and the belief in my worth I’ve gained from doing the inner work, I sent it anyway—and they accepted without hesitation.

Here’s the kicker: I didn’t need a hashtag, SEO keyword, or a winnable-template pitch. It was all about shifting me—my mindset, my energy, my approach.
