The Golden Thread: The Strangers Who Light Us Up
Listen for the messages

One of my favorite things about travel isn’t the places themselves — it’s the people you meet along the way.
When we were in Belize recently, we toured the Xunantunich Mayan ruins with a guide named Marvin. From the outside, he looked like “just a tour guide.” But within minutes, he was sharing stories of Mayan astronomy, sacred rituals, and the resilience of his ancestors.
By the end of the day, it wasn’t just ruins I saw, it was an entire worldview that felt alive through his words.
But his impact ran deeper than history. Marvin had this contagious light about him — fully present, eyes alive with joy, laughing through every story he told. “People often ask me if I’m on drugs,” he said with a grin.
But no. I’m just high on happiness.
Recently, we walked into the bright and colorful Strickland Art Gallery in Selma, and I felt that same energy again. The artist’s partner greeted us with a smile that matched the color on the walls. “We sell happiness here,” he said. And he was right; joy was bursting from every brushstroke.
Those moments reminded me of the kind of person I want to be …
someone who spreads joy, who reminds others of the goodness still pulsing in this world.
That’s the thing about strangers: they often give us exactly what we didn’t know we needed — perspective, kindness, a reminder of what matters. Sometimes in a single conversation, they shift the way you see everything.
That’s why when we travel — or even just explore Raleigh — we say we like to allow an extra “20 minutes of talking time.” I can’t help it. I love talking to strangers. I love hearing their stories, trusting that within them are the little signs, winks, and reminders I’m meant to receive.
Of course, our daughters roll their eyes every time: “Mum, do you have to talk to everyone?”
Yes. Because that’s where the magic hides.
In laughter. In connection. In the simple exchange of energy between two souls who might never meet again.
Until next time, keep noticing the threads.

Thread to Reflect On
Think back to a stranger who left an imprint on you. What did they teach you? Are you still carrying that thread forward?
This Week’s Challenge:
Speak to a stranger. It doesn’t have to be profound, just open your heart to someone new. Maybe it’s a barista, a bus driver, or the person next to you at the park. Pay attention to what they say… and to what the universe might be saying through them.
If this story resonates, hit reply and tell me: Who’s a stranger you’ve met that left a mark on your life? I’d love to hear your story; I read every single one.
