We climbed a 3,000-year-old temple (and it made us question a few things)

Ever visit a place that completely shifts the way you see history … and humanity?

That was our experience at Xunantunich, an ancient Mayan ruin tucked into the jungle near Belize’s western border. We thought we were just checking off a cool ruin. Instead, we got a fascinating lesson in Maya culture, spiritual devotion, and the wild lengths people will go to feel close to the divine.

We climbed steep stone steps to the top of a sacred temple. We learned about gods that demanded the very best—including human sacrifices. We saw carvings that revealed the complex belief systems of a civilization that understood zero before the rest of the world did. And we met Marvin, our memorable guide, who turned the jungle into a classroom and had us laughing (and thinking) the whole way through.
